Rook Maison is a serial killer.

He is a body snatcher. He kills by taking over the bodies of his victims, leaving no blood or weapons at the scene of the crimes. Disillusioned by the loss of his Catholic faith, Rook seeks answers to his unique ability and finds that heaven and hell are not what he was taught to believe. Now, in their way, angels and demons seek to head off the calamity that Rook is quickly becoming because for each body he takes and each soul he breaks, he is becoming more and more Fractured.

Brian Blackwood introduced a new world in this novel. Or expanded on it, depending on whether you've been able to read Michelle Morningstar's books first. This world has its own politics, lore, and rules. None of which really follows where you think it is likely to go. Which I LOVED.

The main character is far from your glorified hero, and yet you root for him. You identify with the tish storm he was presented, question whether he deserves redemption, and yet wish for it all the same. The writing especially sings during action scenes. Descriptions are not unwieldy, and create a visceral movie in your mind.

Four stars for performance only because there is one character voice that was clearly done outside of the rest of the recording production, which is a tad jarring at first, but doesn't take away too much, and is not heavily used during the performance.

I'm really looking forward to the next in the series. It'll be interesting to see further character development and where the story ends up going.

A new take on what you THINK is a familiar world.
