From reader reviews:
Best book on Ramana Maharshi. I've been a student of Ramana's since 1962 and have read many of his books including these 40 verses… I would say this is the best book on his teachings.
Another review:
A simple guide to Self-inquiry. Since it is a personal experience, words are inadequate to express it . But they may guide you. Richard Clarke's work enables a non-Tamilian to learn what the Maharshi said.

In Forty Verses on Reality, Ramana Maharshi explains the nature of the Self, the ultimate reality, and Self-inquiry as the direct method to realize the Self. This new book with my comments and inquiry questions opens these teachings and bring them into your practice and experience.

South Indian sage Sri Ramana Maharshi (1879–1950) is renowned for his teachings on Self-inquiry, the direct path to Self-realization. Ramana realized the Self and transcended ego-consciousness at the age of 16. For the rest of his life he lived and taught on the holy hill, Arunachala.
Sri Ramana was asked by Muruganar, "Pray tell us what is the nature of reality, and how it may be attained, so that we may attain salvation!" This book is the result.
In Forty Verses on Reality, the Maharshi explains the nature of the Self and the ultimate reality. He teaches that the true Self is pure consciousness, beyond the physical body and mind. The verses emphasize the importance of Self-inquiry (Atma Vichara) as the direct method to realize the Self.
Richard Clarke has studied this text for more than 30 years and his comments help open your understanding. There are inquiries along with every verse to bring you to direct knowledge.
