Newton, the family's patriarch, argues fiercely with his wife Minerva, insisting that their daughter Hattie must wed Abner Garland to settle his mounting gambling debts. Though the rest of the family opposes Newton's plan, Hattie, determined to protect her loved ones from ruin, bravely volunteers to go through with the marriage. However, she soon discovers Abner's infidelity—he's been involved with Lucinda Brown, who is now expecting his child. Hattie and Minerva confide in Abner's mother, who, fed up with her alcoholic husband Jess and her wayward son, takes decisive action. Viewing Hattie as the daughter she never had, she instructs her lawyer to prepare a will transferring nine-tenths of her wealth to Hattie upon the wedding day. To ensure no interference, Abner and Jess are compelled to sign a legal waiver before a judge and sheriff, vowing not to contest the arrangement.
