For the Sake of Charity

April 29, 1863, brought the Civil War to Grand Gulf, Mississippi. Sarah Bassler lost her mother six months before. For two and a half years she struggled with this difficult and demanding woman, resenting every day of her care.

Now able to regain her life, she finds a wounded Union officer and is saddled with not only nursing him but keeping him from being discovered. While cleaning the officer’s uniform, Sarah finds a round, brass object...a Confederate decoder. She is asked to not only get the cypher to the Union, but to aid a family of slaves needing escape from Mississippi.

Will she be able to get the cypher to General Sherman, completing the wounded soldier’s mission? Will the slaves finally find freedom? With the demands now present in Sarah’s life, will she find forgiveness for her mother and embrace the fruits of charity?
