The Second Legion arrived in Brittania with high hopes of reshaping the land and the people. At least, that’s what the Tribune thought. Lucius and the other six thousand Legionaries would only roll their eyes at that.
They came because that’s where the Legion was going. And without the Legion to tell them where to go, they would all be lost.
So, they marched through Briton’s forests searching for blue painted warriors. For the first week, they could not find a single one. By the time a month had passed, they saw far too many. Each day brought a new charge, another dozen or so Legionaries wounded or dead, and yet another band of warriors who disappeared mysteriously into the woods. It wore down their spirits.
One day, the Second Legion was attacked. Lucius found himself separated from them. The baggage train was burning and the forests were thick. The smoke from the fires and the thickness of the trees both conspired to keep him from them. He stumbled from one mirage in the smoke to another. Every hour that passed increased the distance between the Legion and him. Within a day, he was hopelessly lost.
After weeks alone in the woods, he is searching for Romans. Any Romans. But the Britons are relentless in their hunt for strays. He has to avoid them every day, and every day they drive him farther away from the only home he has ever known.
Will a witch help him? Will she tell him where the Legion has gone? Can he even try to reach them? They are far away.
