Acerca de esta escucha
Mythology, mystery, and a monster.
It’s October 1920. On Floodwood Pond, deep in the heart of the Adirondacks, two scientist argue as they paddle in search of long-lost Native American artifacts. They are both members of the prestigious Strabo society, but that’s where their similarity ends. Anthony Cardonas is a rigidly self-righteous old-school explorer with political ambitions who becomes increasingly frustrated with the starry-eyed mysticism of his younger companion, Alistair Wulver. The animosity between them escalates into violence in the trackless wilderness, and a murder triggers an unstoppable chain of events.

Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

The Appalachian Trail trail stretches from Georgia to Maine and covers some of the most breathtaking terrain in America - majestic mountains, silent forests, sparking lakes. If you’re going to take a hike, it’s probably the place to go. And Bill Bryson is surely the most entertaing guide you’ll find. He introduces us to the history and ecology of the trail and to some of the other hardy (or just foolhardy) folks he meets along the way - and a couple of bears. Already a classic, A Walk in the Woods will make you long for the great outdoors (or at least a comfortable chair to sit and read in).

Historia
M Train begins in the tiny Greenwich Village café where Smith goes every morning for black coffee, ruminates on the world as it is and the world as it was, and writes in her notebook. Through prose that shifts fluidly between dreams and reality, past and present, and across a landscape of creative aspirations and inspirations, we travel to Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul in Mexico; to a meeting of an Arctic explorer's society in Berlin; and to the graves of Genet, Plath, Rimbaud, and Mishima.

The wandering poet has always been a feature of our cultural imagination. Odysseus journeys home, his famous flair for storytelling seducing friend and foe. The Romantic poets tramped all over the Lake District searching for inspiration. Now Simon Armitage, with equal parts enthusiasm and trepidation, as well as a wry humor all his own, has taken on Britain’s version of our Appalachian Trail: the Pennine Way.

Historia
A nature audiobook unlike any other, Jordan Fisher Smith's startling account of fourteen years as a park ranger thoroughly dispels our idealized visions of life in the great outdoors. Instead of scout troops and placid birdwatchers, Smith's beat - a stretch of land that has been officially condemned to be flooded - brings him into contact with drug users tweaked out to the point of violence, obsessed miners, and other dangerous creatures. In unflinchingly honest prose, he reveals the unexpectedly dark underbelly of patrolling and protecting public lands.

It was the early 1960s. The place, a far-off corner of the Himalayas long fabled in Tibetan tradition to be hiding a valley of immortality among its peaks and glaciers - a real-life Shangri-La. They waited generations for the prophesied lama to come, the one with the secret knowledge of how to "open" the Hidden Land. Then, one day, he came. His name was Tulshuk Lingpa.

Gripping and often poetic, Alone Against the North is a classic adventure story of single-minded obsession, physical hardship, and the restless sense of wonder that every explorer has in common. What Shoalts discovered as he paddled downriver was a series of unmapped waterfalls that could easily have killed him. Just as astonishing was the media reaction when he got back to civilization. He was feted by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and congratulated by the Governor General. People were enthralled by Shoalts’s proof that the world is bigger than we think.

In the autumn of 1938, Germany's reichsführer, Heinrich Himmler, is growing frustrated at the British using their regional power in India to block the passage of an SS expedition to Tibet. Determined to spite them, he plots to steal something the British hold dear and have failed for the seventh time that spring to achieve: a first summit of Mount Everest. Seventy years later, seasoned mountain guide Neil Quinn's ninth visit to the top of the world's highest mountain, this time in charge of the 16-year-old son of a Long Island billionaire, begins to unravel.

Lots of layers to this adventure
Pete Kennedy gives us a modern good vs bad adventure full of literary allusions, cultural references, and spiritual grounding. Ancient artifacts, the Dalai Lama, the Kumari Devi of Kathmandu, geographers, geishas, transcendent beings, crossbows, upstate New York, Kyoto, and the Witches' cat from Macbeth are all in here. Kennedy wraps everything in a nonstop adventure story that is constantly on the move. There must be eight hours worth of adventure packed into four hours of book.
As a fan of Pete's virtuoso guitar playing and musical knowledge, I was delighted to discover his narrative creativity and see all these other areas of his expertise. He knows a lot about a lot! Fun, fast-paced, but also with some things to think about.

Audio version further elevates already great story
Full disclosure: I am related to the author. I am also an avid reader and very discerning when it comes to fiction. I would not blow smoke! That said, I read the book and loved it, and then I listened to the audio version. The author, Pete Kennedy, reads his own work very comfortably, and, as an accomplished musician, even composed original guitar music to serve as a sort of occasional soundtrack in the form of bumpers, going in and out of chapters. This feature, and the pleasing manner in which the narration is delivered, make an already engaging action-adventure novel even more captivating and refreshing in its audio form.
