Reseñas editoriales

Supernatural horror and romance combine in this thrilling story set an American frontier town in 1799. The frontiersmen and the natives don't have the best of relations but when one of the former is saved by a young brave it awakens passions that are not acceptable by the society of the time. Things get tenser as the two must team up to battle an inhuman foe wreaking havoc on the town. Ray Chase lends his powerful, emotive, voice to this audiobook, an edgy and stimulating pause resistor of historical fiction.

Resumen del Editor

The winter of 1799 is falling fast on the small Ohio Territory settlement of Hugh's Lick. Food is scarce, and relations with the Delaware tribe are strained; but things are about to get much worse. In the midst of a storm, frontiersman Cole Seavey is attacked by a creature that is neither man nor beast but something burst forth from the bowels of hell and reeking of the grave. Badly injured, he is rescued by Pakim, a young Delaware brave, and is taken to safety at the home of John Chapman, whom listeners will remember from Jensen's best seller Frontiers. Cole's intense attraction to Pakim leaves him longing for something he fears to even consider. He half convinces himself that the monster he battled is the product of his fevered brain. But then the killings begin, killings of such ferocity they can only be the work of something neither human nor animal. The Delaware call it the Wendigo. As the town waits in terror for the next attack, Cole, Pakim, and Chapman find themselves face-to-face with the Wendigo; it is a face they know well.

Enough resurrections to put Jesus to shame

About two-thirds of the way into this book, I was ready to kill off the hero myself in order to end this repetitious book. The author really beats the "cat and mouse" strategy to death. The characters repeated suffer what should be mortal wounds but then get-up and continue to fight on another day. Hence, I use the term resurrections. The story and its premise are not bad, it's just that the author dragged-out the book to the point of it becoming tedious. The narrator gets my five stars for his excellence and the author gets my two stars. I give him two stars only because of the repetitions in his story, otherwise, I think he is a good author.

Expect the Unexpected!

What did you love best about Firelands?

Firelands has everything. Adventure, mystery, love, history, myths and legends all wrapped up into one fascinating story.

What did you like best about this story?

While reading Firelands, I truly did not know what would happen next. The unexpected seemed to be waiting around each corner. The story was amazing and at the same time, very believeable.

What does Ray Chase bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Ray Chase brings the characters to life! His distinct and spot on interpretations of the voices for each character not only makes them easily distinguishable, but also gives them personality and depth.

If you could take any character from Firelands out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Pakim, of course! He is intriguing, entertaining and his unique insight into this particular time in history would make for fascinating dinner conversation.

Any additional comments?

Some reviews of this book have pegged it a gay love story. I just don't see it that way. To me it is an action packed adventure with some love thrown in for good measure - no different from most other adventure stories. The fact that the characters experiencing love are of the same gender is incidental to the main storyline.

Great frontier adventure/romance

This was a really great adventure based in the frontier Ohio valley with a mm romance btwn a trapper and an Native American woven in. I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this but found myself completely drawn in by the adventure, horror, mystery and romance of this book. I think that is primarily because the narrator does an excellent job. But the story is very engaging from the start. This is not a warm and fuzzy read but has some truly horrific violence in it. At the same time it manages to have very realistic and tender romance btwn Cole and Pakim as Cole tries to come to terms with his feelings for Pakim as well as stay alive. There a twist at the end that I didn't see coming. Overall, definitely worth a credit.

horrible ending*spoilers*

the book wasn't so bad, up until the end, there was literally NO reason for Palmer to die, it served absolutely no purpose, that single act killed the entire story for me, pointless deaths in books that serve no purpose and add nothing to the story are kinda like horses with no legs...….what the hells the point?!?!
