If you are going to write a book about Alaska . .

. . . then you should do some research. First, we don't have pine trees, we have spruce trees. There is a tiny strip of Alaska where pines can grow, and it is in the far south running east along the coast, where this book is not based. Anyone who was born and raised in Alaska--as the character in question supposedly was--would know that the trees this character saw all around her were spruces. The place where the book is set is literally in the middle of a spruce forest. This fact is pretty much impossible to miss.

There are many such errors throughout the book. To name just a few more, we do not have Rite Aid pharmacy, we do not have Bank of America, and you do not need a license to carry a firearm. Every one of these things could have been discovered in less than a minute on Google. So this is just lazy.

The writing is pretty bad also--as in hackneyed and silly. There are constant mentions of illicit sex: a married man watching his young neighbor have sex and contemplating how much he likes doing this, a woman who has an affair with the man her sister cheated on her husband with (the sister never forgave her), and all this was only 40 minutes into the book! Oddly, the characters even use the word "sex" as much as possible. I'm no prude, but it would be hard not to notice a fixation of this degree. The author seems to feel that if she can't make someone say "sex" at least every few paragraphs, then she needs to step up her game.

The only enjoyable part of this book was the narration, which was excellent. Unfortunately it was nowhere near good enough to make me sit through the whole thing.

Maybe this book was meant for a different audience. I love thrillers, suspense, horror, and books set in the snow, so I thought it would be for me. But I will ask for my credit back.
