Acerca de esta escucha
An all-new, never-before-published original short novel by the best-selling author of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, about a hapless American tourist's larger-than-life comical trip to Ireland. Shortlisted for the 2015 Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse prize for comic fiction.
Cornelius P. "Fatty" O'Leary and his wife, Betty, plan a vacation in Ireland for his 40th birthday, where they will tour his ancestral homeland and relax in the countryside. Almost immediately things go terribly wrong: the seats in economy class on the plane are too small; the country hotel's dinner spread and bathroom fixtures leave much to be desired; and the down-to-earth O'Learys find their fellow guests are more than a little snobbish. In this amusing and touching portrayal of a kindly, misunderstood soul, McCall Smith has created yet another memorable character who will become an instant favorite to his many fans.

Historia
In this dual collection of short stories, Alexander McCall Smith brings his trademark humor and warmth to inventive tales of spying and vengeance. In one story, a spy dropped deep into enemy territory manages to disguise himself—quite convincingly—as a nun. In another, an invitation to join the Vatican Secret Service sends a prospective operative down a rabbit hole of controversy and confusion. A third story finds an author, on the brink of public ruin, seeing the error of his ways after an act of kindness saves the day.

It is said that a picture may be worth a thousand words, but an old photograph can inspire many more. In this beguiling book, Alexander McCall Smith casts his eye over five chanced-upon photographs from the era of black-and-white photography and imagines the stories behind them. Who were those people, what were their stories, why are they smiling, what made them sad?

When writer Paul Stewart heads to the idyllic Italian town of Montalcino to finish his already late book, it seems like the perfect escape from stressful city life. Upon landing, however, things quickly take a turn for the worse when he discovers his hired car is nowhere to be found. With no record of any reservation and no other cars available, it looks like Paul is stuck at the airport. That is, until an enterprising stranger offers him an unexpected alternative.

In these stories, inspired by long-lost photographs, the lives of the people in the frame are imagined and then explored, layer by layer. What must have it like to be them? We share the lives of three sisters, brought up in Penang. We hear of what happened to them, and to their Chinese neighbours caught in the tides of war. We see a group of small boys in a Glasgow slum, their young lives stunted by poverty, and hear how life worked out in contrasting ways for them. We follow a young woman's search for love in the unlikely realm of Egyptian antiquities.

When facing a moral dilemma, Isabel Dalhousie--Edinburgh philosopher, amateur detective, and title character of a series of novels by best-selling author Alexander McCall Smith - often refers to the great twentieth-century poet W. H. Auden. This is no accident: McCall Smith has long been fascinated by Auden. Indeed, the novelist, best known for his No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, calls the poet not only the greatest literary discovery of his life but also the best of guides on how to live.

In the words of Alexander McCall Smith: "You feel the rocking of the train, you hear the sound of its wheels on the rails; you are in the world rather than suspended somewhere above it. And sometimes there are conversations to be had, which is what the overarching story in this collection is all about. It is a simple device: people brought together entertain one another with tales of what happened to them on trains. It takes place on a journey I frequently make myself and know well, the journey between Edinburgh and London. It is best read on a train, preferably that one."

You are about to travel to Edgecombe St. Mary, a small village in the English countryside filled with rolling hills, thatched cottages, and a cast of characters both hilariously original and as familiar as the members of your own family. Among them is Major Ernest Pettigrew (retired), the unlikely hero of Helen Simonson's wondrous debut. Wry, courtly, opinionated, and completely endearing, Major Pettigrew is one of the most indelible characters in contemporary fiction, and from the very first page of this remarkable novel he will steal your heart.

Everyone's Dinner Party
If you could sum up Fatty O'Leary's Dinner Party in three words, what would they be?
funny, clever, sympathetic
What did you like best about this story?
I loved the interactions between the characters and how all of them experienced their own sense of misguidedness (if that is a real word).
What does Steven Crossley bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The narrator was excellent! He did a wonderful job portraying Irish and Arkansas accents, as well as having just the right about subtlety and nuance in his voice to highlight the ridiculousness of a situation.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I was moved by the many moments when Fatty expressed his sincere incredulity at the situation as well as Betty's steadfast support of him, regardless of the fiasco.

Dissapointing
What would have made Fatty O'Leary's Dinner Party better?
I generally love Mr. Smith's books. The humor is subtle yet his books are thought provoking. I felt that this one lacked any of the usual qualities that draw me to his books.

Not His Best
This story dragged on, wandered about and wasn’t up to Smith’s usual fabulous entertainment. Surprising, really.

Not up to par
I read all of AMS's novels set in England and Scotland. This one is not since it is an American couple visiting Ireland and I should have stayed with England and Scotland. Not good in any way. Wish I hadn't wasted a credit but I did finish it for some reason.

Not McCall Smith's Best
I didn't care for any of the characters in this book, except possibly Betty, Fatty's wife. Most of the people Fatty met in Ireland were either snobby or dishonest and conniving. Fatty himself seemed clueless and entitled. It was disappointing because I'm a staunch fan of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, and I also loved La's Orchestra Saves The World and the Corduroy Mansions series. At least I didn't have to buy this one, as it was a freebie from Audible.
