It’s high-wheelers versus the new safety bike in a knock-down, drag-out seven-day bicycle race – elbows flying. In the year 1889, bicycles reigned supreme and races drew thousands of cheering fans. Tab Huntsman, aspiring reporter and cyclist, joins amateur racer Gary Mandrel in their quest to prove the safety bike is better. They’re up against professionals on high-wheelers. And so begins a week-long event on an indoor track, filled with skullduggery, crashes, drugs, cheating, and cutthroat competition. Who will win the $1000 prize? Extensive research and the author’s cycling background bring bike riding in the San Francisco Bay Area to life in the days before cars.
