What happens when the richest nation on God's earth is driven to the outer limits of starvation?

When the grain crop failed in Kansas it seemed like an isolated incident and no one took much notice. Except Ed Hardesty. Then the blight spread to California's fruit harvest, and from there, like wildfire, throughout the nation.

Suddenly America woke up to the fact that her food supplies were almost wiped out. Her grain reserves lethally polluted. And botulism was multiplying at a horrifying rate.

I’m convinced this was written by an alien. People don’t speak like that. Lots of violent sexual & rape content for those sensitive. Story was over just ok.

Liked the characters but didn’t much care for Ed. He was too self righteous. It shows how much we depend on the food supply and how some have more access with wealth.

Very cool premise, interesting first half. But, after the third rape scene I was just waiting for it to end.

I know it was written in the 80's, but come on.

Billed as a post apocalyptic story, it’s really more of a muddled mystery about a group of people trying to figure out what’s happening as the country’s food supply is rendered inedible. It’s an ok story, but just not that interesting. It’s more about the characters and very little about how it happened or why it happened.

The narration is so bad it’s almost funny - like it’s a parody except it isn’t. The narrator sounds like he’s dryly delivering the nightly news, even when he’s actually narrating fairly graphic sex scenes.

That was a slog

I didn't even get past chapter 7. I'm not a Republican but still find the storyline to be in bad taste. I wanted a suspense/thriller. Not political party bashing or whatever you want to call it. I turn to books to get away from the daily nonsense. I don't turn to books for fictional portraying of how a political party may or may not be. Democrat or republican. The author wasted no time jumping into Republican senators and those involved with him to be the creepiest, crooked slime balls. I don't want to hear about all that when I'm turning to fictional books to unplug from the real world that's all too full of this.

Yes, I am willing to make allowances for books written in a different era. A lot of allowances. But the sexual violence felt gratuitous and was sometimes even portrayed in a positive light. It's not just that I found it distasteful, but that I think it does actual harm in the world by perpetuating harmful ideas about the nature of consent. Masterton is never one of my favorite authors, but this one was especially hard to take.

Ugh.
