Noah discovers that he can see fairies when he finds one stuck in a mouse trap on his porch. To him, her grey wings are beautiful, but to her, they are a hurtful reminder of her place in the world.

Fairies are assigned jobs based on the color of their wings, and fairies with grey wings are known as Sad Fairies.

Sad Fairies aren’t supposed to be sad. They’re supposed to make humans sad. It’s Fred’s only job, but she can’t do anything right. When her most recent assignment ends in tragedy, she decides to quit. She hides out in the human world, trying to forget centuries of trauma.

Fred and Noah bond over their shared experiences with depression, suicide, and death. Can they find love in all the darkness?
