Writer/director/producer Justine Bateman examines the aggressive ways that society reacts to the aging of women's faces.

Face is a book of fictional vignettes that examines the fear and vestigial evolutionary habits that have caused women and men to cultivate the imagined reality that older women’s faces are unattractive, undesirable, and something to be "fixed".

Based on "older face" experiences of the author, Justine Bateman, and those of dozens of women and men she interviewed, the book presents the listener with the many root causes for society’s often negative attitudes toward women’s older faces. In doing so, Bateman rejects those ingrained assumptions about the necessity of fixing older women’s faces, suggesting that we move on from judging someone’s worth based on the condition of her face.

With impassioned prose and a laser-sharp eye, Bateman argues that a woman's confidence should grow as she ages, not be destroyed by society's misled attitude about that one square foot of skin.

It really makes you think about how much importance is put on ‘how young we look’. Society wants youth, but what about a life well lived? Wisdom and knowledge? Thanks Justine for enlightening me! I am proud of my age, and now I will be proud of my face!

This book was really good! I love that it gave me the permission to be my unaltered self. I love the fact that the author embraces her aging, and looks at it in a positive light! I am very good read for any young woman or older woman, who thinks that they need to change themselves to meet society’s demands.

A sigh of relief and gratitude

I felt like this was an absolutely necessary book to read for someone in my industry. Beautiful work, Justine. Although I encourage women to change things about themselves that they are not happy with, I also encourage women that changing how they feel is a solution too. I love the services we offer, and when accessed from a healthy mindset I know they change lives for the better, but that’s because the world we live in doesn’t allow us to live fully otherwise. I loved her comparison to aesthetics being similar to other cultures forms of beauty mutilation (long neck ladies of Thailand, foot binding in China). This was a thought provoking book that helps guide our culture a step in the right direction, which is valuing people at all stages of their life. Basing someone’s worth on their age is not necessary anymore because resources are abundant and people’s mind are more valuable now than ever. It was an easy listen. Engaging. Witty. Thank you!

These stories, read beautifully by Justine Bateman, tell our thoughts and our feelings and actions as women in today’s standard of age, beauty and self worth. I thoroughly enjoyed it! I plan to now read her first book, Fame

This book, these stories, her literal voice is necessary and essential for our society. Somebody had to say this. I’m grateful she has. Her authenticity is a gift. Her beauty is relevant and crucial.

Life changing

A times it was very depressing because of the reality of how women are treated and expected to look beautiful and when they age often devalued by others, especially men. But the end was hopeful that it’s not just about how we look at who we are. However, I would’ve liked to hear more stories about how women have overcome the struggles with aging and how they are viewed by others.

Wow
