This book contains two sections, each telling a captivating story of an American expatriate who finds love and inspiration in a different country. Millie Knutson, a literature professor in a small Iowa college, is tortured by memories of abuse when she was younger. She becomes a local vigilante, protecting other abused women. Finding her life spiraling downward into unrelenting violence, she flees to Morocco, where she finds love and a renewed purpose. The second section describes the unconventional marriage of Connor Morehouse, an aspiring writer, and his emotionally fragile wife Gisele. They first live in Lima, Peru, where Connor’s literary fortunes blossom. But his personal life is barren. Eventually, Connor moves to a remote section of Patagonia in Chile, where he finds even greater literary success and a lasting, loving relationship.
