Historia
In an astonishing feat of empathy and narrative invention, our most ambitious novelist imagines an alternate version of American history. In 1940 Charles A. Lindbergh, heroic aviator and rabid isolationist, is elected president. Shortly thereafter, he negotiates a cordial "understanding" with Adolf Hitler while the new government embarks on a program of folksy anti-Semitism.

Historia
The Counterlife is about people enacting their dreams of renewal and escape, some of them going so far as to risk their lives to alter seemingly irreversible destinies. Wherever they may find themselves, the characters of The Counterlife are tempted unceasingly by the prospect of an alternative existence that can reverse their fate. Illuminating these lives in transition and guiding us through the book's evocative landscapes, familiar and foreign, is the mind of the novelist Nathan Zuckerman.

Historia
In 1951, the second year of the Korean War, a studious, law-abiding, and intense youngster from Newark, New Jersey, Marcus Messner, begins his sophomore year on the pastoral, conservative campus of Ohio's Winesburg College. And why is he there and not at a local college in Newark where he originally enrolled? Because his father, the sturdy, hardworking neighborhood butcher, seems to have gone mad - mad with fear and apprehension of the dangers of adult life, the dangers of the world, the dangers he sees on every corner for his beloved boy.

Once an inventive puppeteer, Sabbath at sixty-four is still defiantly antagonistic and exceedingly libidinous. Patrimony, a true story, touches the emotions as strongly as anything Philip Roth has ever written. Roth watches as his 86-year-old father - famous for his vigor, his charm, and his repertoire of Newark recollections - battles with the brain tumor that will kill him. The son, full of love, anxiety, and dread, accompanies his father through each fearful stage of his final ordeal, and, as he does so, discloses the survivalist tenacity that has distinguished his father's long, stubborn engagement with life.

"I don't want you to rehabilitate me," Philip Roth said to his only authorized biographer, Blake Bailey. "Just make me interesting." Granted complete independence and access, Bailey spent almost 10 years poring over Roth's personal archive, interviewing his friends, lovers, and colleagues, and listening to Roth's own breathtakingly candid confessions. Tracing Roth's path from realism to farce to metafiction to the tragic masterpieces of the American Trilogy, Bailey explores Roth's engagement with nearly every aspect of postwar American culture.

We all think we know the South. Even those who have never lived there can rattle off a list of signifiers: the Civil War, Gone with the Wind, the Ku Klux Klan, plantations, football, Jim Crow, slavery. But the idiosyncrasies, dispositions, and habits of the region are stranger and more complex than much of the country tends to acknowledge. In South to America, Imani Perry shows that the meaning of American is inextricably linked with the South, and that our understanding of its history and culture is the key to understanding the nation as a whole.

Mr. Artur Sammler is, above all, a man who has lasted, from the civilized pleasures of English life in the 1920s and 30s through the war and death camps in Poland. Moving now through the chaotic and dangerous streets of New York's Upper West Side, Mr. Sammler is attentive to everything, and appalled by nothing. He brings the same dispassionate curiosity to the activities of a black pickpocket on an uptown bus, the details of his niece Angela's sex life, and his daughter's lunacy as he does to the extraordinary theories of one Dr. V. Govinda Lal on the use we are to make of the moon.

Ralph Elllison's Invisible Man is a monumental novel, one that can well be called an epic of modern American Negro life. It is a strange story, in which many extraordinary things happen, some of them shocking and brutal, some of them pitiful and touching—yet always with elements of comedy and irony and burlesque that appear in unexpected places. It is a book that has a great deal to say and which is destined to have a great deal said about it.

Oscar Wilde brings his enormous gifts for astute social observation and sparkling prose to The Picture of Dorian Gray, the dreamlike story of a young man who sells his soul for eternal youth and beauty. This dandy, who remains forever unchanged---petulant, hedonistic, vain, and amoral---while a painting of him ages and grows increasingly hideous with the years, has been horrifying and enchanting readers for more than 100 years.

Amazing glimpse of a literary mind!
Roth is a masterful story teller and wordsmith who quietly entices you into his world and then captures your interest to the very end . The residual is an amazing glimpse of a literary mind at the turn of the 21th century.

most likely one of his best if not his very best.
I've fallen in love with Roth over the past six or so months. Listening to Exit Ghost is an emotional experience. Nathan is old and going through the stages of frailty leading up to death. His mind is slipping. He's still sharp though. His mind is biting and his reflections and opinions still relevant. Exit Ghost brings us back to the plot threads of The Ghost Writer and I think both ties up some of those threads as well as leaves them open. I'd say if you've read through any of the Zuccerman novels it's worth it for you to finish this journey

Dirty Old Man
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Not really time well spent. The story was lacking in integrity and character flaws. Very disappointed that he turned out to be such a dirty old man. A pathetic excuse for a human being.
What could Philip Roth have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Somehow there should have been some redeeming qualities to his main character.
Do you think Exit Ghost needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No

Vintage Roth - powerful
In this book Roth deals with the trials and tribulations of ageing and illness. Zuckerman, the main character, is torn between the rational course of action and the self destructive and painful desire for a young woman. The futility of this relationship is emphasized by the fact that it can never be consummated due to his impotence. Roth gives us great insights into ageing, sickness and the turmoil caused when the the mind and self are still full of overwhelming, infatuous desire but are trapped in a sick, decaying body.
But you don't have to be old or sick to identify with the sentiments here...Roth just mirrors and magnifies our pathetic human weaknesses and anyone who has suffered the pain of an irrational, all consuming desire will understand this too well. It's a powerfully written book with convincing narration - strongly recommended.

Incredible
I could not stop listening to this book once I started. I listened to it in the car, while I was cutting the grass, and while I was on lunch. I have learned more from Philip Roth about my country then from any politician, history book, or New York Times editorial. He is incredibly perceptive and, in my mind, is the greatest writer of all time.He truly tells it like it is.

WARNING WARNING
Unless you are an extreme leftist you will hate this book. But, to be fair, if you are a communist and the detailed description of a ‘Marx Like’ character wetting his diaper along with his surroundings sounds appealing, then this might just be the very book for you.

not to my liking
I didn't find this book enjoyable at all - it was boring til the end. In fact if I had been reading the book I don't think I would have gone past the first chapter; all the talk about incontinence was too much, and a 70yr old mans' fondness for young women was distasteful.
All in all I did not enjoy the story...or the reading of it.
