Starting the book off with a massive twist instantly hooks you. flipping the plot on its head. You are instantly invested, then the author slowly brings you back in line with the familiarity of charecters who make pull you into their world. Lastly, Crumley uses a writing formula used by Hollywood TV series by creating story arch cliffhangers that were set up unknowingly along the way.
I also have to give praise to Micheal Cummings. Not sure I have given enough over the past books. A narrator makes or breaks a book. The thing that strikes me about Cummings is his voice doesn't change. (Other voice actors will create charecters by completely altering the tone.) Everyone of Cummings characters have the same voice. Yet, each is so vastly diffrent you can create mental images of each unique charecter. It's a testimate to his grasp on infection, cadence, and use of emotion.
