Getting off the train she notices a familiar childhood acquaintance. But Abe is no longer the boy she remembers, but a man in his own right, just as surprised to see her. He politely, if hesitatingly, offers her a ride home, and she accepts. The conversation is cordial, and he drops her off late at night and says goodbye. Life is immediately as if she’d never left, her stern father happy to see her but putting her to work early morning. And now the family is even more insistent on her baptism. She’s also not home long before suitors approach her father requesting to court her, and one of them is an interesting surprise. But is it good or bad that one of her suitors seems quite strict in the Amish ways, ways far more than she’s used to? Is he even sure about seeking her based on his own appraisal of her character?
