It didn’t happen overnight. It wasn’t a single event. It was a chain of events. The pandemic lockdowns were definitely the tipping point—the kind of societal disruption that rocks a civilization.
Wealthy people sheltered in place—had their groceries delivered. The poor found themselves forcibly quarantined—pallets of rations were distributed in habitat cube courtyards.
It was supposed to be two weeks. Two weeks turned into two years.
Desperate for normalcy, people lined up for fast-tracked, experimental vaccines. When the initial vaccination campaign and subsequent booster drives proved ineffective, people took to the streets to voice their discontent.
Protests begat vandalism and looting. The widespread civil unrest—lawlessness—normalized rioting, until the headlines raced with the razing of neighbourhood after neighbourhood; city after city.
It wasn’t at all like the Golden Age films depicted. The United North American Government didn’t call in the army or the UNA Guard. There were no riot squads—batons, rubber bullets, water cannons, capsicum sprays, or stun grenades.
Instead, the UNA Government produced a study on how, “law enforcement does more harm than good in riot situations.” An expert panel was assembled to assess the statistical data on crowd control, disbursement, property damage, and the potential number of injuries and casualties. Thereafter, local law enforcement was recalled—ordered to stand down. On site, police were ordered to, “observe, negotiate, and withdraw rather than confront and enforce.”
