Tras el naufragio de su barco, destrozado contra la costa irlandesa en el otoño de 1588, Cuéllar emprendió una marcha en solitario por el interior de Irlanda. Fue un intento desesperado de escapar de la muerte segura que le esperaba si era capturado, como ocurrió con otros muchos náufragos españoles de la expedición, asesinados y desvalijados en cuanto pisaron tierra firme.
