Perhaps as interesting as the facts he reveals and the opinions he records about Dickens and George Eliot, politics and the civil service are the judgments he passes on his own character.

The narrator has a whistle in his voice that drove me nuts, maybe I am the only one to hear it. And the writing was very mundane but informative. I did learn some things that where new to me but the listen was unenjoyable.
