Resumen del Editor

Unique to this title is:

  • A Historical Introduction
  • An Overview
  • An Analysis of The Main Characters

You may of course skip all of it and go straight to the main title if you do not want any spoilers and come back later to the beginning.

Edwin Vincent Odle was born in 1890. Not much is known about his life except that he was a playwright, critic, and short-story author. During the 1910s, Odle lived in Bloomsbury, London. From 1925 - 1935 Odle was an editor of the British short-story magazine The Argosy. His brother, Alan, was a well-known illustrator.

The story of The Clockwork Man takes place in 1920 when a strange man appears during a village cricket match. As one of the teams is a player short, the captain of the team recruits the stranger as a substitute for the missing man. The man looks very unusual. “His arms revolved like sails of a windmill. His legs shot out in all directions. He wore a very unusual red wig, over which he wore a brown bowler hat. His face
was crimson and flabby. His ears flapped.”

Where the clockwork man comes from, every single person has a clock installed in his brain. The clock keeps people going on forever, so there is no need for children and relationships.

The Clockwork Man

This was a good story, for its time.Very innocent.Brianna Fernandez is a fair to good narrator. She needs to decide on a style and stick to it.I didn;t care for the explaination prior to the actual atory.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Interesting book, especially for it’s time

This is the first book I’ve read/listened to by this author. It is a very creative, forward thinking book for its time. Some characters find the clockwork man interesting and some find him abhorrent. I think this is very real take on people’s varying responses to something new and misunderstood or unknown. It is funny to hear words used like ‘keyboard’ which had a completely different meaning then.

This is the first book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Brianna Fernandez ). She gives the characters individual voices and somewhat imparts personalities to also differentiate. Her style is that of reading (not telling) the story, but most of this book is narrative so it works.
There are uncomfortable pauses in editing at inappropriate times. Even at 1.5x listening speed it made me pause and wonder if I accidentally turned the book off. Other areas- like the beginning of a chapter- were sped up and run together. These lack of pauses were uncomfortable. She often stumbled on words and mispronounced many (some difficult, some simple words).

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing.

Time and effect!

I’m afraid I must admit that the symbolism and representation of the original story are beyond me. I understood the historical introduction, overview, and analysis much more than the tale itself. The story is a classic and I cannot fault the author for my lack of interpreting his meaning. Written in 1923, I presume it had a more profound effect.
