“Nitty shouldn't have been driving after you and her got into it.” Cheng said quietly, to Tam.
“Shock does strange things to people. She wasn’t expecting those kinds of words from you.” He added.
“No matter what Nitty does or doesn't do, you still feel the need to defend her.” Tamara said, rolling her eyes.
She stood up from her seat, “does anyone want something from the cafeteria?” she asked.
Everyone responded, “No thank you.”
Tamara walked to the elevators. The doors opened and she stepped inside, pressed the button for the cafeteria and quickly changed her plans and pushed the number three button. She thought about Darrell’s invitation to see his mother and meet his daughter and decided to take it. She knocked on the door.
KNOCK!KNOCK!
She stood outside and there was no answer and she thought to herself, maybe it was a sign so she turned and began walking away. The door opened and Darrell stepped into the hallway.
“Cupcake.” He called.
Tamara turned around and he waved his hand for her to come back to the room.
“Sorry it took me so long, I was helping my daughter. Come inside, I’m glad you changed your mind.” Darrell said, smiling.
“Look who I bumped into, Mom.” He said, grinning from ear to ear.
“Hi beautiful girl, it's been a long time. You haven’t changed one bit.” She said, standing to hug Tamara.
His mother gave hugs that made you forget all your problems, her embrace was heart warming.
“How have you been?” arms stretched out to look at Tamara.
“I have been great.” She replied, smiling.
“How have you been?” Tamara asked.
“I’m doing well for an old lady.” She said, slightly laughing.
“This is my granddaughter June. She’s seven years old.” She added, walking Tamara next to the bed, to introduce her.
“Hi June, you can call me Miss Tam.” She said, touching her small hand.
“I’m praying for you.” She added, smiling at June.
“I just wanted to stop by and say hello. I have to get back upstairs. My son is in surgery right now.” Tam told his mother Mrs. Kem Sax.
“Okay, it was good seeing you again. Here’s my number, maybe we can have lunch and catch up.” She said, hugging her one last time.
“Bye… bye… June get better sweetie.” Tam added, as she left the room.
“Let me walk you to the elevators?” Darrell offered.
Tamara responded quickly, “I’ll be okay, thank you,” as she rushed away.
“Are you sure? I don’t mind.” He said, walking slowly behind her.
“Yes, I’m sure. It was nice seeing you again,” she added, waving goodbye from the elevator.
“Hey cupcake…” he hollered down the hall before she stepped inside the doors.
Tamara turned around looking towards Darrell.
“Just wanted you to know I've never stopped loving you.” He said, blowing her a kiss.
