A Practical Overview

The author has clearly spent a great deal of time researching all these trades, and the real-life stories of families living them. It is a great introduction to the trades, and contains real, practical advice for people looking to enter them. A fantastic book.

Inspiring, truthful, accurate, and biblical

I appreciate this book by Rory Groves, as it speaks truth in a time when Families seem to be so divided

Very helpful jn piecing things together that I might want to do. And perhaps to add some new skills. Would 100 percent recommend.

A needed study with an unneeded religious focus

As a modern homesteader and a self professed Luddite, I am really interested in trades that let one be with loved ones, make a decent living, bring satisfaction, and be durable through volatile economics and shifting values l. This book was thorough in its coverage and analysis, and I think that a *condensed* version would be excellent for high school or even junior high school students to read before committing to the time and financial obligations of college. It was well researched and gave references at the end of each chapter for those wanting more information.

BUT I might not have bought this book if I had known there would be Bible quotes at the beginning of almost every chapter, as well as a preference for interviewing people (of each trade) that made their faith part and parcel of their description of the trade. The woman interviewed for the chapter on writing sounded like a God groupie, couldn't get a sentence in without working God into it. I am pretty tolerant of the choices we make and that everyone has a right to their beliefs, but this book started to feel like Sunday School very early on, and stayed the course til the end.

in summary, if you are a devout Christian, you'll love this book - it had Bible quotes at the beginning of almost every chapter and is very appropriate for your kids. If you aren't but can skim through about 1/4 of the intros and interviews, then wait til its on sale and have the forward button handy.
