Resumen del Editor

Dr Thorne, the third novel in Anthony Trollope's Chronicles of Barsetshire, sees Trollope steer away from the clergy and the church politics of The Warden and Barchester Towers and move towards the scandals and prejudice of the upper tiers of Victorian era aristocracies. It tells the tale of Frank Gresham and Mary Thorne, a couple intent on marriage despite their conflicting social backgrounds. Frank is engaged in a fierce battle with his family as his mother vehemently opposes the marriage and pushes him to marry a wealthy heiress; however, Frank shuns her attempts and is determined to accept Mary on her own terms. Dr Thorne contains all of Trollope’s beloved prose: always solicitous, gentle and kind to his audience, Trollope never shies away from poking fun at the pretentions of some of his characters as he peppers the narrative with wonderfully witty observations that will leave you smiling.

Matchless Reading

David Shaw-Parker is a genius, making the joyous delights of Trollope come to life with a wit and humor that are a constant pleasure.

Read as part of the Barsetshire series or alone

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I highly recommend this book to friends, including my friends who are doctors. The
Victorian ideas n the practice of medicine are so quaint ! The whole story is gripping, and the ending is satisfying though at that point predictable. The narration is laugh out loud witty.

What other book might you compare Dr Thorne to and why?

This is one of six long novels in the Chronicles of Barsetshire. All are good, and any one of them could stand alone.

What about David Shaw-Parker’s performance did you like?

Clear diction, good job or impersonating the various characters.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A Victorial country doctor and his adopted daughter.

Wonderful book, great reading

David Shaw-Parker well differentiated the voices of all the characters. Roger Scatcherd is one of my favorite, and the saddest, of the Trollope characters whom I know. Shaw-Parker’s rendering of Scatcherd’s accent was credible and impressive.

One of the classics!

If you like Jane Austin or that time period, you will like this book. I liked it more than Trolloe's other books, maybe because the BBC series (of the same name) was so good, although the book is better, especially about Louie. #Clever, #Funny, #Nostalgic, #Witty, #Narrator, #tagsgiving, #sweepstakes

Trollope and a worthy narrator

What can I say, Trollope is fantastic. Parker really brings these to life, shame the book had to end
