Doomed to Fail explores the heaviest music the world has ever heard, tracing doom, sludge, and post-metal as their own distinct (and incredibly loud) traditions. Anselmi covers the bands and musicians that have impacted those styles most - Black Sabbath, Candlemass, Melvins, Eyehategod, Godflesh, Neurosis, Saint Vitus, and many others - while diving into the cultural doom that has spawned such music, from the bombing of Birmingham and hurricane devastation of New Orleans to glaring economic inequality, industrial alienation, climate change, and widespread addiction. This book is a massive celebration of the heaviest music in the world with tons of incredibly in-depth information about various bands and their unique sounds and styles. A must read for any doom metal fan or if you’re just getting into the genre and need a place to start. Highly recommended.

This was a great listen! As an ardent doom/sludge fan, I really appreciated the way this was written - honest, informative, and eloquent. Anselmi's take on the history of doom metal is refreshing and entertaining - that coming from someone who is familiar with the genre. He presents a convincing evolutionary phylogeny of all that is heavy and serves as a wise and helpful tour guide for the journey. Readers of heavy metal literature - this one is a must! I must also add that the performer for the audiobook is great, too!

an oral history of one of the most confusing genres to date. if you enjoy some of the heaviest, filthiest, and downright depressing metal I definitely recommend this book
