Newbery Award-winning, New York Times best-selling author Avi recreates the sights and sounds of wartime Brooklyn in this fast-paced story.

Like every student in Miss Gossim’s 1943 fifth-grade class, Howie Crispers has one thing on his mind: World War II. When he isn’t in school, Howie stays busy watching for Nazi spies. So when he notices his principal acting suspiciously, it’s his patriotic duty to investigate. But what he discovers is far more devastating than any headline at the newsstand.

This book was required reading for my 7th grader. I read it, too. It is a good read/listen but rather ordinary

I like more raw emotion in my stories and a bigger pull to the end. This is not such a book. You ride along with the main character trying to help a favorite teacher who is told she will lose her job because she is pregnant. The teacher-student bond is not so compelling. Basically the kid thinks she is beautiful.

Above said, it is a good period piece and I did feel it was toward the end of WWII.

Nice period piece but not as captivating as I hoped.
