Dr. John Dolittle lebt mit seiner Schwester Sarah in Puddleby. Er war ein sehr geachteter und reicher Arzt. Doch mittlerweile kommen die Menschen nicht mehr zu ihm, da er viel lieber Tiere behandelt. Und das geschah, weil Dr. Dolittle bemerkt hat, dass er die Sprache der Tiere versteht und mit Hilfe von Polynesia, einem alten weisen Papageien aus Afrika sogar ein Sprachbuch verfasst hat. Weil er keine Einnahmen mehr hat und sehr viel Tierfutter braucht, ist sein Vermögen so gut wie aufgebraucht und gleichzeitig verbreitet sich in der Tierwelt sein Ruf besonders durch die Zugvögel sehr schnell und immer mehr Tiere suchen Hilfe bei Dr. Dolittle. Plötzlich landet eine Schwalb im Garten und berichtet, dass in Afrika die Affen sehr krank sind und einen Arzt brauchen. Ein Schiff muss her, um so schnell wie möglich nach Afrika zu kommen.
