Resumen del Editor

The army does not want you to listen to this book. It does not want to advertise its detention system that coddles enemy fighters while putting American soldiers at risk. It does not want to reveal the new lawyered-up Pentagon war ethic that prosecutes US soldiers and marines while setting free spies who kill Americans.

This very system ambushed Captain Roger Hill and his men.

Hill, a West Point grad and decorated combat veteran, was a rising young officer who had always followed the letter of the military law. In 2007 Hill got his dream job: infantry commander in the storied 101st Airborne. His new unit, Dog Company, 1-506th, had just returned stateside from the hell of Ramadi. The men were brilliant in combat but unpolished at home, where paperwork and inspections filled their days.

With tough love, Hill and his first sergeant, an old-school former drill instructor named Tommy Scott, turned the company into the top performers in the battalion.

Hill and Scott then led Dog Company into combat in Afghanistan, where a third of their men became battlefield casualties after just six months. Meanwhile, Hill found himself at war with his own battalion commander, a charismatic but difficult man who threatened to relieve Hill at every turn.

After two of his men died on a routine patrol, Hill and a counterintelligence team busted a dozen enemy infiltrators on their base in the violent province of Wardak. Abandoned by his high command, Hill suddenly faced an excruciating choice: follow army rules the way he always had, or damn the rules to his own destruction and protect the men he'd grown to love.

Release the Rest!

Must Read before sending your son or daughter to fight for this country. 10 years later there is no reason to not release redacted portions of this book.

Too much info

The first quarter of the book was a bunch of fluff. Otherwise it was a good listen.

Heroes

American heroes impeded by rules of engagement made by the uniformed, who were ruled by egos.

These men are heros!

What the Army brass did to these men, who were protecting American soldier's lives, was deplorable. Hill, Scott and the others who stood up for their brothers embodies the true definition of hero. so glad this powerful book was written.

wow the reading of this book just pissed me off

I can't put into words the anger that I felt while listening to this. It's insane to think that we are doing just this and worse to our soldiers who ultimately have committed minor offenses, while the higher command does worse and walks free. there should never be politics on the battle field. our soldiers should be supported to the utmost of the ability of the unit. I can't imagine why young Americans join said military these days. and after spending 10yrs in law enforcement, I'm not surprised to know that le is having the same problem. we can't let offenders go unpunished and I get it, but at the same time if we continue down the current path we won't have to worry about offenders because we will have no military or le. thank you cpt. hill and 1stsg Scott for you service. thank you to all veterans and current military members. and thank you to my brothers and sisters in emergency service. stay safe and watch your 6 because indeed the enemy is inside your wire.

Review

From the very moment I started this book, I couldn't walk away from it. Story should put the higher ups on notice that their actions or lack of action is noticed at every level.

Every Army Officer Needs to Read This Book

I echo those who have responded to this book with bursting pride in officers like Hill, and outrage at the self-serving political sensibilities of field grades who toss their juniors under the bus. This is a good step toward really pulling back the rug and demonstrating how upper level officers close ranks to protect their own incompetence. Toxic leadership has long been a problem in the Army and it's good to see a light being shone on it. Well done, Captain Hill.

The narrator was also excellent.

Authentic and tragic.

A first hand account of unnecessary struggles and restrictions we put on our fighting men and women who are willing to give their lives for the freedom of this country.

Powerful. “Band of Brothers” / “Lone Survivor” fans will love it

This book is well written. Dramatic. Captivating. All based on a true story. So many emotions. So many “wow” moments. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. Your jaw will drop. Thanks to Captain Roger Hill for his service and doing it right. Great job by the narrator as well. Amazing delivery.
