Acerca de esta escucha

The purpose of this book is to use examples from the life and experiences of a Christian physician who relies on his faith in his daily practice to show how grief can be overcome and how family and friends can best minister to the sick and dying. The book explains how very sick and dying patients can make rational decisions to ensure that they receive the most compassionate and effective care. The book illustrates how service to others can be a cure for grief and loss.

Dr. Victor Vogel is a medical oncologist who cared for women with breast cancer and did clinical research in breast oncology for thirty-six years. He has also sustained life-threatening and disabling illnesses. He endured the death of his mother when he was a young oncologist and wrestled with the limits of medical care. A lifelong Christian, he has struggled with the challenges of answering questions about suffering and death for his patients, his family, and his friends. He has edited two medical textbooks, is the author of hundreds of professional articles and editorials, was a medical school professor for twenty-two years, and has traveled and lectured on four continents. He has appeared on national news broadcasts and has been quoted in the New York Times. He has been married for forty-six years to a pediatrician, is the father of two children, and has eight grandchildren.

This book will provide information and clarity to individuals and their families who are struggling with medical decisions at the end of life. It will guide patients and their physicians who are wrestling with the risks and benefits of medical and surgical interventions during the last months and weeks of life. It will assist patients and families in asking appropriate questions about treatment options, and it will help them decide when hospice care is appropriate. The book also offers both philosophical and theological answers to the perplexing question, “Why does a loving God allow us to suffer and die?”
