Three quick science fiction stories

Distant Saga Trilogy contains three quick stories, each completely separate. It's not really a trilogy, except in that each carry a similar theme on the bleakness of humanity, technology or the future.

The first story opens with a school shooting, with one student realising he is the target of the attack. He escapes, only to be confronted by someone who informs him he is the hope for humanity, a cure for all disease. But is this person here to rescue him or something else?

The second is set in the future where man has colonised the moon. But a disease is running rampant there and people must escape back to earth.

The last story tells of a time traveller, who may have inadvertently endangered the entire timeline through their time travel experiments.

All three stories are interesting and enjoyable enough, just not great. The concepts behind the stories are better than the actual telling, with some of the story beats feeling a bit off. This is particularly the case with the first story, where the student has a friend shot and killed in front of him, runs away from the school shooting and then acts more concerned about someone using his mother’s china than he was about the death of his friend. Maybe it could be written off as shock, but it doesn’t read like that.

I think there is promise here, it just needs a bit more experience.

Narration by Nicholas Eblen is mixed. He does voices for the characters, and whenever someone is speaking dialogue the narration is really engaging – voices, emotions, personality. But I found his base narration to be fairly flat. Even when exciting or tense things are happening this is not conveyed through the narration. Eblen almost sounds bored at points. The good of his work balanced the not good, leaving it with a middle score.

Note that while the audiobook is just number 2.5 hours, nearly 45 minutes of this is taken up by the preview chapter of Walker’s upcoming book. So that is actually more than a quarter of this audiobook as ‘bonus’ content.

A solid first effort

*I was provided with a review copy in exchange for an honest review*

Three unrelated short stories with bleakness being the only real theme connecting them. Black Mirror minus the tech aspect.

The narrator did nothing for me.

The stories had interesting ideas behind them even if the execution wasn't great. Hopefully the author will continue to hone his craft and work his way into full length novels.

Humanities Bleak Future in 3 Short Stories

Distant Saga Trilogy a Short Story Collection written by Jeff Walker. The Narration is provided by Nicholas Eblen. This collection contains three short separate science fiction stories with themes about the future humanity faces being dark, over-dependent on technology, corporate greed, and corruption on all levels of government. The story on time travel was okay. The school shooting in the first story was also just as bland. The total run time of the book is 2.5 hours but 45 minute is a preview of the author's upcoming book. The narration by Mr. Eblen was fair, he gave the characters voices and the dialogue was truly enjoyable but the other part of the narration seemed to be disengaged with the stories. Some of the audio production had a slightly hollow quality to the performance. This was not constant. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. good ideas but execution is lacking.

these are short stories but they're not executed well. Ideas are interesting though. For a short story collection they seem to overstay with their welcome.
