Jake Riley lives and works on his ranch. A hoot-owl wakes him up in the middle of the night. Jake is so frightened from the owl's screech, he falls on the floor. As Jake is climbing back into bed, he notices a glowing bright light out his bedroom window—out behind the horse stable. Jake thinks that the glowing bright light is probably the flame from a lantern that Gene Trusker (his only ranch hand) forgot outside. Jake walks to the stable, but can't find the lantern. He then thinks the light must have been lightning, and checks on the horses to make sure they are safe. One of the horses is missing. But the doors were closed and locked before Jake went inside the horse stable. Jake is confronted with a mystery about how can his horse be missing when the stable and stall doors were closed and locked, and the outside stable walls are intact. Jake waits in the stable for his horse to return. Jake’s horse is in his stall a few hours later while the doors are still closed and locked. Is Gene playing a trick on Jake?
Does being overly tired explain what happens the following week when Jake sees a light descending to the ground—that lightning or falling stars might not be able to explain away?
Will Jake cave to the pressure from Pastor Jenkins and the Christian church members who warn him that they will burn him alive at the stake? Or—will Jake search for the truth that will lead him to the absolute revelation, which is beyond thought-provoking?
