Resumen del Editor

The "Devil Dogs" of King Company, Third Battalion, 5th Marines—part of the legendary 1st Marine Division—were among the first American soldiers to take the offensive in World World II—and also the last.

They landed on the beaches of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands in August 1942—the first US ground offensive of the war—and were present when Okinawa, Japan's, most southerly prefecture finally fell to American troops in June 1945.

Ordinary men from very different backgrounds, and drawn from cities, towns, and settlements across America, the Devil Dogs were asked to do something extraordinary: take on the victorious Imperial Japanese Army—and defeat it. This is the story of how they did just that and, in the process, forged bonds of brotherhood that still survive today.

The company contained an unusually high number of talented writers, whose firsthand accounts and memoirs provide the color, emotion, and context for this extraordinary story. In Devil Dogs, award-winning historian Saul David sets the searing experience of the Devil Dogs into the broader context of the brutal war in the Pacific and does for the U.S. Marines what Band of Brothers did for the 101st Airborne.

Great and gritty

Anyone who is even a moderate ww2 buff will love the compiled accounts of the Marines who fought the hardest battles this county has ever seen. Gripping anf terrifying at times the auther does a great job of recounting in brutal detail the struggle it was to win WW2.

The narrator equally does a magnificent job of voices and accents, so much so that at times I thought another person was doing the reading.

Greatly told story on what the Marines went through in WW2

I liked this book on a couple of levels. For one it told the story of a multitude of Marines. There were some names that I never have heard of. Men this nation owes a debt of gratitude that we will never be able to repay. So not a boy does it tells a great story of the fighting in the Pacific in WW2 but it gives you a start to look for and find the memoirs of the forgotten ones. Great story well written. Recommend this for anyone wishing to learn more about the WW2 experience in the Pacific.

Good Story with a flawed narrative.

The narrator spoke with a. British accent
It appeared that he was unfamiliar with the American pronunciation of terms like corpsman and names like Halsey. These and other mispronounced distracted attention from the story

Devil Dogs

The narrator spoke way too fast but more importantly just how and what would you choose an Australian accented narrator of a USMC book? Terrible choice.

okay but not great

Being familiar with the subject I find the author relies too much on Eugene sledges book with the old breed. The reader, who is good, is not familiar with this material and mispronounces many words which is annoying.
