Resumen del Editor

The Second World War was turned on its head at the moment Admiral Kolhammer's ultra-modern stealth warships were hurled back through time from 2021. But no one could have predicted just how much of a nightmare would ensue...

Only months after the Transition, the great powers scramble to develop the weapons of tomorrow. The year 1942 is now a world of crude jet fighters, monstrous attack helicopters, and unholy dirty bombs - a mongrel technology, born decades prematurely.

Then, in a radical rewriting of history, Japanese forces sweep into Australia, foreign agents begin a campaign of terror in the USA, and Germany prepares for an all-out attack on Britain. The 21st-century forces must resort to the most extreme measures yet and face a future rife with possibilities - all of them apocalyptic.

Picking up from where he left off with Weapons of Choice, John Birmingham shocks and awes us with this gripping second instalment in the Axis of Time trilogy.

Alternative history at its best

Designated Targets is the first book of a military, political, social alternative history trilogy that shows what can happen when an experiment in quantum physics goes terribly wrong. It is very clever, well written, and even somewhat thought provoking. It only requires you to suspend your disbelief a bit. The trilogy is a most entertaining listen or read.

great book!

As a follow up to Weapons of Choice this book is excellent! Could hardly put it down. I really appreciate the 1940's spy games and the sordid past of Hoover & the FBI.

Another winner

Heard the first one HAD to get this one and just got tne last of the three part series.
Too bad it's almost over, would make for a great movie but guess it'd be too long.
Very enjoyable.

so much promise

such a cool concept brought down by the auther's political leanings. From naming the powerful aircraft carrier Hillary Clinton, (only presidents with navy experience get that honor), to writing woman with that weird toxic masculinity

Interesting story

The story was good, but the author seems to forget sometimes that he’s already told us something. For example, the CI computer was processing information too fast for humans to understand and was breaking it down for them. This was said a few times. I didn’t forget it from the last chapter.

Great story.

the story is detailed and the characters are well written.
The history, or rather alternative history really peeks my interest. I am looking forward to the 3rd. book.

Potty Mouth in Training

Would you try another book from John Birmingham and/or Jay Snyder?

I wouldn't buy another book by these authors for a several reasons. They use way too much foul language, e.g.,

What do you think your next listen will be?

My next listen will be one of several books by Joel C. Rosenberg, Stephen Coonts, Dean Koontz, John Grisham, Stephen King.

HOOKED

I've read many alternate history books and milti-universe genre books over the years. This is fast becoming one of my favorite series.

Just as good as the first book!

I IMMEDIATELY began listening to this title after I finished the first book. I'm glad that the author AND narrator continue deliver in this novel. The only draw-back I noticed was that the Narrator's female voices leave a lot to be desired. It is a bit of a distraction hearing him shift from COL Jones' deep voice into Julia's somewhat higher pitched voice.

The other drawback is that the author goves OVERBOARD on artistic description of certain things. It really turned into a frickin' book of poetry at times when he would go into EXTENSIVE detail describing a scenic view or some piece of military technology.

Beyond all of that, I greatly enjoyed the book and look forward to the 3rd entry.

Great storyline, but... I

Great story but when the narrator does two of the female voices, he make them sound like "Mort Goldman" from Family Guy. Every time I hear one of their voices I picture him. Kind of a distraction from an other great narrative.
