A pacemaker should have saved oil and gas magnate Nathan Moore’s life. Instead, it provided his killer with a seemingly perfect means of execution.
A bombing at one of Nathan’s oil rigs days earlier indicates his death could be part of a bigger conspiracy, a web Special Agent Tori Templeton must untangle. But her first order of business is separating the personal from the professional--the victim’s wife, her best friend, is one of the FBI’s prime suspects.
Clearing Sally’s name may be the biggest challenge of her career, but Tori finds an unexpected ally in the newest member of the task force, recently reinstated Deputy US Marshal Cole Jeffers. As Tori and Cole dig deeper into Nathan’s personal and business affairs, they uncover more than they bargained for.
And the closer they get to finding the real killer--and to each other--the more intent someone is on silencing them for good.

I have read this book at least twice snd decided to give the audiobook a try. I was not disappointed. She is excellent. The reason it can be reread or listened to more than once is that the plot is pretty complex. There are a lot of names and moving parts.
At its heart, the book is about betrayal and forgiveness, hard disbelief and faith. But Mills doesn’t make the characters live too much in their heads. There is a great balance between knowing their thoughts and the characters actions and words.
One thing I really appreciate is that the characters’ problems are more than the typical “I’m too afraid to love…” scenarios. These characters have health problems, problems from crime in the neighborhood, selfishness, nosy relatives, small deceptions, interpersonal friendship problems, etc. They live life like we experience it, offending and forgiving, thinking and doing. Their problems aren’t blown beyond proportion melodramatically, while at the same time the characters all have big issues to deal with but do not always handle them in healthy ways. As the characters deal with problems and each other, the investigation into serious crimes is conducted in a professional, believable manner.
I love the book and highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys a good detective novel with a little romance and social drama but not melodrama. There is a faith element, but it isn’t pushed in ways that are uncomfortable or preachy. In my opinion all readers of suspense, both men and women, Christian or not, will enjoy this story. The reader’s voice is like silk and hits the right note for ALL characters. She’s amazing! Great book all around. 6/5 ⭐️
