Amelia Jenkins struggles to understand why her father has been picking suitors who look quite handsome, but have nothing underneath that to facilitate a courtship. She wants to marry for love and passion, not because the man looks good.

However, it seems men who look good are the only suitors left in Boston for a woman of twenty-one years of age. Amelia refuses to marry someone she cannot carry a conversation with.

Ethan Wyman lost his wife in childbirth. With his child now a year old, he decides that it's time to find someone else to help him around the ranch. Especially so that his son can live at home instead of with his mother.

To this end, he puts an ad in The Matrimonial Times.

When Amelia finds the ad, Ethan believes that his loneliness will come to an end and that he'll be able to raise his son at home. Unexpected circumstances on her way to Wyoming, however, throw a wrench in their plans...and threaten their marriage.
