Very Good!

Sherlock Holmes and Lucy James Mystery

This is one of the best audiobooks of this series I have listened to so far. More intense and more plot to the story. Narrators were very good.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review

I love these books

Lucy is still getting over everything that happened in The Jubilee Problem. She is also helping nurse, or at least trying to but he is being stubborn, Jack back to health he wants to go back to work and doesnt want her help, Lucy starts to have real feelings toward him. While this is happening Sherlock and Lucy are called to investigate the murder of a General at The Diogenes Club where the body was found in a locked room can they figure out how the killer did it and who the killer is

Still going strong :)

This time the whole story is told from Lucy's POV so we are more immersed in her side of the investigation but we are also privy to the way in which she sees herself, which is quite revelling. I just love her wit and her big, big heart.

We also get to know a lot more about Jack's background and how said past brings danger into his life and Becky's. Again, I enjoyed the realism of the stories, Jack wasn't miraculously cured after the wounds sustained in the previous book, his leg is giving him trouble and his feelings of depression are very logical in his situation. But... he's too stubborn to just give up, and with the chance of becoming a Sargent in his future, he's, more than ever, willing to keep fighting and get the final prize. If he survives this adventure, that is :P

Fantastically well-narrated, and a great addition to the series :)

Good Continuation

~Disclaimer: I received a free audiobook copy of this book. ~

At the beginning of the book, Death at the Diogenes Club by Anna Elliott, I appreciated the quote that captured the essence of this Sherlock Holmes: "I decided within a week of knowing him that the real trouble with Sherlock Holmes was that he had no switch to turn his mental powers off and on. Entering into conversation with him was like being a butterfly and asking to be skewered by an entomologist's pin; if you spoke to Sherlock Holmes, you placed yourself under the fierce lens of his scrutiny—inescapably." The perspective from Holmes' daughter really brought his character to life.

This book delves into the fallout from the previous book, exploring Lucy's trauma and the damaged leg of Jack. The story also sheds light on Jack's past. The level of violence in this book is more intense than in previous books. Despite this, the series still feels fresh and enjoyable.

Although the story is a bit more predictable than previous books, the logic of the series is still engaging, and the narration remains enjoyable.

Story and performance well matched

This is a good sequel, well written and fun. The two narrators do a splendid job of differentiating the characters, with Watson and Holmes unique as well as Lucy and Becky. The main characters are well-developed and the minor characters distinguishable.

How and Why?

I am A Sherlock Holmes reader. Although this is definitely a different Sherlock, I am enjoying the stories and look forward to the next!

Trick ending

I had gotten through a lot of the book & thought that they had solved the plot. Then I looked at how many chapters I had left & there was 8! I was like what? There’s still more?? But it was good. Loved this book & loved Lucy & Jacks romance growing!

More of the same...

They say a story is never whole original...that's true for this one. I guessed so many pieces of this story as it unfolded that it became boring rather quickly. There was a good amount of character development compared to other books in the series but that new information didn't make up for (IMO) the "same old things".

One thing that really bothered me about this story...and I am not sure why it irritated me so much...
Why is it always "bitter almonds"? Can we use a different poison (other than Cyanide)?

Disappointing Addition

Trigger Warnings: Mass Shooting, Torture

I continue to be impressed with the narration and it remains the best part of this series. Unfortunately missteps in the story itself get in the way here, so I can’t recommend this specific episode unless you are (like me) a completionist. The primary issue for me was the strange moral lapse of the main characters in the middle of the story that was completely out of place to the general wholesome tone of the story. Once that irritation settled, it only increased with each little apparent inconsistency … such as the relatively weak portrayal of Sherlock Holmes himself (yes, I understand the need for others to participate in the plot, but that is not how Sherlock works, so it would have been better for him to remain mostly in the shadows and allow this to be more Lucy’s story).

For somebody who was so famous for his perception, Sherlock was frequently second on the scene so to speak. Unlike the previous stories, there was much less international intrigue here as the plot unfolded with a more domestic feel. The mystery itself was well done if also fairly simple and Lucy’s relationship with her father and Constable Kelly (James) advances satisfactorily.

I was given this free advance review/listener copy (ARC) audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
