With a new season about to start, Mike Cannon has his focus on Cheltenham, in five months time; a horse he has high hopes for needs to race and win in order to be ready for the festival.
He is looking forward to a good year when suddenly he finds himself facing a number of unexpected problems, both personal and professional, including the tax man looking for money he doesn't have, the potential retirement of his long time assistant and an uncomfortable relationship between his star apprentice and her Dutch boyfriend.

The Ayrshire police need help after the head of a racehorse once trained by Mike Cannon is found in a field. It is not an isolated incident.
Cannon is asked to help uncover what is behind the gruesome finds.
He is reluctant to get involved until he notices a pattern that suggests that there is a personal connection to what is going on.
Then someone is killed; Murder or an accident?
The victim has a link to Cannon and the local police think that he is involved somehow.

Meanwhile his investigation takes him across the country and to numerous race meetings as he tries to establish what is behind the killing of the ex-racehorses.
Cannon inadvertently puts himself in danger as he seeks the answers.
What he uncovers is crime on an industrial scale, big enough that those behind it are happy to kill without a second thought, particularly those that get in the way.
Death is all around and is looking to add Cannons' name to an endless list of victims.
