Mike Cannon was disappointed last season when his horse, White Noise, was injured and had to miss taking a shot at the Champion Hurdle during the Cheltenham Festival. Unlikely to win he wanted to give the horse the experience of running in the race, hoping to make a challenge the following year.
Now, he is ready to try again; White Noise treated in Ireland has fully recovered, just in time for the new season.
Cannon hopes to start the campaign at Punchestown, as he needs to race the horse in order to qualify for the race in six months time. But, as with all the best laid plans, Death gets in the way and Cannon finds himself at the centre of the mystery with no idea why.
The police have little to work with but suspect that Cannon is the key somehow, eventually seeking his help, which he agrees to do reluctantly.
As the season starts, a new owner, a TV personality with a dark secret, brings Cannon his best horse to train after the untimely death of the horses' previous trainer. Cannon is unsure if it's a good idea, but is talked into it by his assistant and best friend, 'Rich' Telside.
Adding to Cannon's problems are a feed contamination scare, injuries to some of the horses in the stable, managing a new apprentice and his concern about finding a replacement for Telside as the workload on him increases while Cannon is dragged deeper into solving the murder in Ireland.
Simultaneously his personal life undergoes a change when his daughter makes an unexpected announcement.
As the season progresses, Cannon notices that he is being followed wherever he goes on different racecourses.
Why?
Who is showing an interest in him?
Cannon needs to work out what is going on before he becomes a victim himself.
Inevitably he finds himself in exactly that position, leading to the pieces of the puzzle falling into place with Death coming to claim him as a prize.
