ORIGINAL STORY - WRITTEN BY A HUMAN
Deadly Obsession is the intriguing prequel novella to the Detective Ange Watson Thrillers—a seven-book series set against the rugged, dramatic beauty of the Australian landscape.
This short but powerful read introduces readers to a younger Ange Watson, capturing her first steps into the world of crime-solving and revealing the origins of the tenacious investigator readers will grow to love. Whether you're new to the series or already a fan, this story offers a deeper understanding of what drives Ange—and what nearly breaks her.
Deadly Obsession was inspired by time spent with real-life homicide detectives in my hometown. Through Ange’s story, it explores what draws people to such a relentless line of work, the emotional cost of facing violence and tragedy, and the inner strength required to face it every day.
The story opens at the edge of a deadly confrontation in Ange’s detective work—then rewinds to uncover the path that led her there. While it stands strong on its own, the novella carries even greater weight when read as part of the full series. So, no matter where you are on the Ange journey, welcome. I hope you enjoy the read!
A Routine Case… or the Start of Something Deadly?
Constable Ange Watson’s policing career is fast unravelling. After calling out a superior for recklessly putting her life at risk, she’s been sidelined, labelled as a whinger, left questioning whether she even belongs in the force. With her resignation email drafted and her finger hovering over "send," she’s ready to walk away for good.
Then, her unimpressive sergeant dumps a case on her desk—a minor one, or so it seems. A beloved pet Staffordshire Terrier, Molly, has been shot, and it’s clear he expects Ange to go through the motions and brush it under the rug. But when she arrives at the scene, something feels off. This wasn’t a random act of cruelty. It was an execution—cold, calculated, and carried out with precision.
The dog’s devastated owner—everyone’s favourite neighbour and a dead ringer for Mrs. Doubtfire—is inconsolable. Ange, a devoted dog lover, dives in headlong. But something doesn’t add up.
Her boss isn’t interested in solving the case, or her wacky theories, but if Ange is right, this isn’t just about poor Molly. It’s something much bigger. Something dangerous.
