He immediately booked a doctor’s appointment for me, that day. The Doctor didn’t hesitate to inform me that I had mouth and throat cancer, but he was just an MD. He immediately referred me to two specialist oncologists. The first oncologist told me I have left the cancer too late and would prescribe palliative care only. The second said he would rush me into hospital for urgent treatment. I took the second option! The hospital told me that I needed intensive radiation and chemotherapy and that not everyone survives such aggressive treatment.

When the treatment started, the doctors informed me that I would never be the same again, nor would my voice. Indeed, I may never speak again. I had to sign a form to that effect and accept full responsibility for my treatment and outcomes, including death. Imagine the thoughts that coursed through my mind. I had built a career and reputation around my voice. My international bestseller Talk and Grow Rich, says it all. Being named, ‘Britain’s Leading Motivational Speaker’ on the front cover of Success Magazine, tells another story. Having made my living from public speaking, selling, consultancy and mentoring, talking had been my life. Lots of folk immediately give up all hope when they receive bad news about the Big C. Not me. A year after my treatment, having had all my saliva glands destroyed and losing my voice for three months and having to learn how to talk again, the world was locked down with Covid.
