Deacon has an ugly history, a history that broke him, leaving him a ghost of a man. Out of necessity he left the normal world to descend into the criminal world and found he fit. So he stayed. Cold as ice and living off the grid, Deacon has no intention to connect, not with anyone. Then he returns to some remote cabins in the Colorado Mountains and finds they have new owners. One of them is Cassidy Swallow, a young woman willing to work hard to live her quiet dream in a house by a river surrounded by aspen and pine.

Suddenly Deacon finds he's at war. Cassidy's pull for him to connect is strong. He fights it, but he loses, always coming back for more. But when he does, he gives her nothing. From the first time she sees him, Cassidy knows Deacon is dead inside. She knows he’s the kind of man who could destroy a woman. But one night when Deacon's control slips, Cassidy takes a chance. He might break her. He also might be her dream come true.

I liked these characters. This book is more like the Kristen Ashley I enjoy! The other books in this series were disappointing. I liked John Priest aka Deacon, and I like Cassidy - two believable characters. I liked the storyline as well. Hot sex scenes, fun dialogue, and interesting characters. The only downer was the reader. I just don't like her style. To me it's like fingernails scraping a chalkboard. The female voices for the secondary characters she used were horrible. Here are these buff, hot guys...I do not think their wife's would have those screeching loud voices. Yikes! Just not in to her reading /performing style.

Best book by far in this series

This is the author I know and love. The story line was great. The narrator was much better than the one who was unable Raid. She spoke at the right tempo. I will, read this, along with Knight and Creed again.

I liked the story and I always enjoy the weaving together of other story lines- I also enjoy a strong female character and this book had that!

What other book might you compare Deacon to and why?

All of Kristen's books are the same - strong rugged men with weak females. Literally all are cookie cutter with that EXACT theme. So yes, Deacon compares to all the men in all her books.

What does Stella Bloom bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I thought she was a good narrator.

Any additional comments?

I liked the book because I am used to the fact that all of Kristen's women are whimpering followers that follow every command a man gives. With that in mind I get past the frustration and try to enjoy the book. But why does Kristen think it is sexy to be weak and totally controlled by a man, with no thoughts of her own?

With that in mind, I liked Deacon the book and the character. Once again, I had to force myself to try and like the female character due to the fact she was also written with the characteristics I list in paragraph one. She is a weak follower like all of Kristen's female characters. Having a strong job like Nna did in another Kristen book does not make her strong. She still did everything the male character said and acted like all the women do in Kristen's books - do what a man says in all things and be there for primarily sex.. This book is no different. The female is there simply to be a screwing partner., with the woman always being mad for a half a minute even if the situation deserves much more. And always goes back because she can't resist the sex.

Reading Creed now and it is especially bad. Creed deserted Sylvia in that book 16 yrs ago and Sylvia was devastated but yet she stayed mad at Creed for literally 5 minutes when he shows up after 16 years because she wanted sex. Yep another weak female.

With all this in mind, I mainly listen for the STRONG male characters and then try to tolerate the women.

All of the women in Kristen's books are weak

I loved this book in the series. It's nice to see a main female character not a complete doormat.

My favorite one so far!

It's like that feeling you get when you stand in front of your full wardrobe and complain of nothing to wear. I have heaps of books to read, an Audible membership that gives me discounts, even a credit to satisfy an impulse. So, what do I pick? A good old KA of course.

It's been yonky donks since I read or listened to Deacon. To be honest, I think this was my first listen, but I can't say that for certain because I have a shocking memory. I'm so glad I gave into the impulse though. I forgot how much I loved this one.

Unlike the other Unfinished Heroes, I felt like Deacon was the most...hero...ish?!?! I don't mean donning a cape and acting all heroic (which I'm sure he's quite capable of). I mean that he is the kind of book hero that I'd happily nominate for book hero of the year. Don't get me wrong, he's far from perfect and leaves Cassie for too long "protecting her from him", but, Oh, the words he says...

This man he has some MOVES!! This man has some WORDS!! Both his moves and his words are SEXY AND HOT!! There are some kinky scenes which I enjoyed but I admit to being surprised where KA went. Well, surprised the first time I read it. This time, and considering the Honey series, I guess not so surprising and more a confirmation that KA's a little kinky. 😉

Deacon is also sweet, caring, possessive and bossy. Sure, he was a twit for a bit, but I forgave him...and he brings cute puppies.

Loved my re-read/listen and now it will be hard to pick anything other than another KA audio. But, which one??? Heaven and Hell or maybe Play it Safe? Decisions...decisions...

I'm glad I followed my impulses...
