Received as an audio review copy from Story, this is an honest review. Narrated beautifully by the author Levi Jacobs, brings to life this poignant and intense epic fantasy adventure. Aletheia Vjolla is a bizarre rarity among the male monk students training at a well revered temple; being a girl blessed with elemental magic though to be only something a man could wield, Aletheia endures continual chaos and abuse by the teachers and fellow students to prove she deserves a place at the temple. The story has some good bones, but the pacing lacks stakes and urgency. The female protagonist connects with a witch drop-out, and they become lovers. Not the kind of story that interests me.
