Ein deutscher Schausteller präsentiert in St. Petersburg dem Publikum seine Sensation: das Riesenkrokodil Karlchen. Der Beamte Iwan Matwejewitsch, seine Frau Jelena Iwanowna und ihr Hausfreund Semjon Semjonowitsch sind neugierig, das kuriose Tier zu sehen, und begeben sich an Ort und Stelle. Als Jelena Iwanowna die "Attraktion" schließlich sieht, ist sie enttäuscht und findet das Tier abscheulich. Außerdem glaubt sie gar nicht, dass es lebt; um sie vom Gegenteil zu überzeugen, neckt der Deutsche es mit einem Stöckchen. Iwan Matwejewitsch wird übermütig und neckt das Krokodil ebenfalls, woraufhin er kurzerhand verschluckt wird. Jelena Iwanowna verlangt, dass das Tier aufgeschlitzt werde, doch der Deutsche und dessen herbeigerufene Mutter drohen sie zu verklagen, falls Karlchen Schaden nimmt. Da dringt aus dem Leib der Kreatur Iwan Matwejewitschs Stimme hervor - er hat überlebt. Da er selbst Mittelständler und stolz darauf ist, ergreift er sogleich Partei für die Sache des Deutschen: das wirtschaftliche Prinzip habe Vorrang. Seine Aufgabe als Beamter könne er, da es künftig offenbar so sein müsse, auch im Magen eines Krokodils ausüben.
Die Groteske Das Krokodil stammt aus dem Jahr 1865. Sie erschien in der von Dostojewski damals herausgegeben Monatsschrift "Die Epoche". Da Dostojewski bankrott machte und seine Monatsschrift schon im Juni des gleichen Jahres eingestellt wurde, blieb die Erzählung unvollendet. Irrtümlicherweise ist diese Groteske von liberalen Kritikern jahrelang für eine Verspottung (in Form einer Allegorie) des kurz vorher nach Sibirien verbannten radikalen Publizisten Nikolai Gawrilowitsch Tschernyschewski gehalten worden, was zur Folge hatte, dass nach Erscheinen des Romans Schuld und Sühne von liberaler Seite in einzelnen Blättern sehr ungünstige Kritiken über dieses Werk gebracht wurden. Später hat Dostojewski sich ausdrücklich gegen diese Auffassung verwahrt und erklärt, er habe damals, nur ein "phantastisches Märchen" schreiben wollen, "eine Art Nachahmung der Gogolschen Novelle Die Nase: es war also ein rein literarischer Scherz in ausschließlich humoristischer Absicht." ... Wie auch immer - ob satirisch, grotesk, ironisch oder tragisch-komisch: der Autor zog in dieser (leider unvollendet gebliebenen) Erzählung alle humoristischen Register.
