Resumen del Editor

Haris Abadi is a man in search of a cause. An Arab American with a conflicted past, he is now in Turkey, attempting to cross into Syria and join the fight against Bashar al-Assad's regime. But he is robbed before he can make it, and is taken in by Amir, a charismatic Syrian refugee and former revolutionary, and Amir's wife, Daphne, a sophisticated beauty haunted by grief. As it becomes clear that Daphne is also desperate to return to Syria, Haris's choices become ever more wrenching: Whose side is he really on? Is he a true radical or simply an idealist? And will he be able to bring meaning to a life of increasing frustration and helplessness? Told with compassion and a deft hand, Dark at the Crossing is an exploration of loss, of second chances, and of why we choose to believe - a trenchantly observed novel of raw urgency and power.

Gripping Tale, Beautifully Written and Dramatically Read

The characters in this book take us on a journey into the dark center of Syrian violence and show us the many conflicting human factors at work. More than in TV pictures and news reports, this fictional account depicts the human side of those caught in the conflict--their individual loves, regrets, losses and betrayals. Author Elliot Ackerman, a decorated Marine veteran of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, spent years researching the Syrian conflict and the result is a beautifully written story that comes alive as it is read masterfully by the narrator.
This book would appeal to those who appreciate great writing and anyone looking to understand one the world's most troubled areas.

Dark and wonderful

Elliot Ackerman spins a dark and wonderful story about the human cost of war. The emotion is real and the memories will linger.

Beautiful Story Well Told

Vikas Adam is an awesome narrator! I was really surprised by how well he handled all of the different characters accents. Usually when dudes try to do lady voices it's hard to get right, but Vikas doesn't overdo it and it lands well. More importantly, what a story! It definitely opened my eyes to a whole other world.

Nice voice; inconsistent performance

Th narrator has a nice voice; however his performance is inconsistent. He mispronounced some words, pronounced the wrong word several times, his character voices got inconsistent at times, but all in all he did a pretty decent job, not a bad job, but not one of the worse I have heard. It did help my appreciation of my reading of the novel, as I listened to the audible recording while I read the novel, as is my practice. I would recommend the audible recording. The narrator gave a well-paced, emotive, and attuned performance.

Not what I hoped for

After hearing Ackerman on NPR I wanted to read this book and with Vikas Adam narrating I had high expectations. I was rather disappointed.
It’s really more of a short story without a lot of development other than they are all broken by war but can’t stay away. Money seems to flow freely and disappear. The author started well enough to keep me going but I was glad it was short.
This was my second book narrated by Adam and he is a master of accents. Enjoy his style.

Performance detracted from seriousness of the story.

The ending is an example of how timing is critical. Just as one should have certainty that the book is ending, the voice of Audible is in your ears. Please allow time for reflection.
