I’ve never had to play nice with the cops before. As a matter of fact, in the past, the only playing I ever did with them was to stay completely off their radar—or to get off of it as quickly as possible. But I guess I was naïve to think things would always be that way, that in my new position as an investigator for the Congregation there wouldn’t be some occasional overlap with the proper authorities.

That doesn’t mean I have to like it.

When Detective Joss Carter comes to me for help with a case involving multiple murder victims—victims murdered in a manner that points to my side of the tracks—my first thought is that I’m the one under suspicion. My second thought is that I’m pretty sure I can outrun the guy…

But it eventually sinks in; I’ve got another case. One that points to a supernatural serial killer. And maybe most importantly, the NAPD is willing to pay a decent consulting fee. Win-win. Well, maybe not for the people getting murdered…
