Sam Johnson of the mighty Johnsons of Naples, Nevada (Rancher's Girl), is a horse trainer by profession. He and his father, Colt Johnson (Whisperer), have a training business on the Johnson Ranch and have done well as trainers for many years.

A freak accident with a wild horse brought in for training leaves Sam wounded physically and emotionally. After his injuries heal, his confidence as a horse trainer is shot, and Sam wonders if he'll ever want to be a trainer again.

Confused about his life, he leaves the ranch in Nevada to stay with his great grandparents up in Sonoma, California, wine country. His great grandfather slowly begins to engage him with horses again, but it's an uphill battle and one that Sam isn't sure he wants to fight.

He meets Ellie Lombardi, whose family has owned a winery in Sonoma for generations. She's got trouble of her own. Her parents were badly hurt in a car accident, leaving her father in a wheelchair with dementia setting in. Someone is stalking her, and the winery has financial troubles.

Neither Sam nor Ellie is interested in a romantic entanglement, but circumstances throw them together, and they tentatively try each other out. Dispensing Sam's demons and Ellie's stalker become overwhelming, and their budding relationship could be over before it really begins. Love must find a way.

This is the first in a series called Rancher's Legacy based on the second generation from the Rancher series.

A romance with a cowboy in wine country

Dark Horse is a romance about a cowboy who is struggling to overcome fear and a woman who runs her family winery in Sonoma. I enjoyed hearing a story that took place in locations I’m familiar with, and it was an interesting story. I was not too impressed with the hero of the story however, and the romance felt forced.

The narrator of the audiobook had an easy to understand voice and does a decent job, but he has the wrong voice for the book.

Dark Horse by Jeanne Harrell is a wonderful western romance that takes place on a ranch. Thomas Block did an excellent job with the narration. The main characters Sam and Ellie meet under unpleasant circumstances. Sam was a horse trainer, he quit because he was badly hurt by a wild horse that came in for training. He moved from Nevada to California he moved in with his great grandparents. Ellie family owns a winery. Her parents were in a bad car accident. Now she is running the winery and taking care of her parents. By the way, she has a stalker and the winery is in financial trouble. Neither Sam nor Ellie is interested in romances when circumstances throw them together. Can they help each others out of the situation they are in? Can they find out who is stalking Ellie and why? Listen to find out the answers. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.would recommend

Horses and Romance

This is a great book for horse lovers and romance lovers alike. The superb narration allows the listener to get lost in the story.

Sweet cowboy romance

The legacy lives on in the next generation. Lots of healing needs to happen, both physically and mentally. Some serious problems arise with exciting moments. Compelling story that was a fine ride to the happily ever after. Thanks to the author for providing a copy for my voluntary review.

Would you listen to Dark Horse again? Why?

Yes because it made me feel good! Wonderful, wholesome characters having real-life type problems but overcoming them. What's not to enjoy?!?

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dark Horse?

I don't want to have a spoiler... but... the showdown between Sam and Kiran (sp?) was pretty great with Ellie's help!
