This Russian/Ukrainian family living in Russia is confronted with an existential dilemma as Russia was preparing to invade Ukraine. The family had connections to both countries and realizing that they would likely be involved in the conflict, decided that they needed to leave the country. The borders were quickly closing to immigration and they had to make a rapid exit. This is the story of their dramatic escape and search for a safe destination. As I read the story, I found myself identifying with the author and wondering if I would have the intestinal fortitude to make such a life-changing step into the unknown with a large family in tow, and have the resilience to persevere in spite of the multiple hardships. I found this to be an intense and thought-provoking story that held my attention and made me appreciate the freedom and security that I enjoy in our country. I look forward to hearing the next chapter of the story. It was educational, eye-opening and I highly recommend the essay.
