Enjoyable who done it

I really enjoyed this police procedural. The plot had twists and turns in the beginning of the story. I like audiobooks, but this narrator is not very good at differentiating the voices of the characters. Also, the subtle humor gets hidden. It's hard to explain. However, the narrator does have a pleasant voice. I will be reading more books by this author. This is a clean read.

New favorite author!

John Dalglish has found the formula for creating intriguing, page turning crime novels that satisfy thoroughly without the objectionable content that fill many books in the genre.
His characters are well developed and his stories are carried along in a sharp, "just the facts" style that allow the reader to solve the crime along with his detectives. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

A good, clean, nicely paced police procedural

A man arrives home, late, intentionally because since his divorce there's no pleasure in it anymore. Unfortunately, on this night, it's worse than usual: A killer is waiting. He is shot and killed.

Peter Brandt, a Dallas homicide detective, begins to investigate and quickly finds himself deep in the weeds of politics, corporate intrigue, and a love triangle. This is a short novel, a tightly plotted police procedural set in Dallas. Dalglish builds up his characters--both living and dead--convincingly. This is written with respect for the police but not a false sense that they're perfect, and I like to see both those traits in a good police procedural.

I don't know Dallas, so I can't say how true it is to the city, but other readers who say they know Dallas seem happy with it, so probably no major blunders. The narrator has a good, clear, strong voice, which is not only true to the main viewpoint character, but also good for the listener.

Recommended.

Enjoyable detective story

This was another great clean detective story by John Dalglish. You can not help but like the lead detective, Pete Brandt, as he uses his wits to solve a double homicide and to efficiently uncover some nasty political wrangling. The way he visits his wife's grave and talks to her is heart wrenching but very sweet and it endears him to the reader even more. The narrator did a great job in the audiobook of giving visuals to the listener and imparting the emotion and tension in the story. Overall this is a very enjoyable, story that will keep entertained. I received the audiobook at no cost and under no obligation to review.
