The lead character is probably on one of the spectrums—some level of light autism combined with misanthropy combined with something I had first took to be introversion. In fact some of the stuff in the beginning, where he talks about having to deal with people, and having to get out of the house and so on, we’re very relatable to my introverted self.
What stood out most about this story was the sarcasm and the snark. Holy crap, the MC makes about every biting observation it’s possible to make, and several you may never have thought of. I’m not kidding. Every snarky, asshole thought that ever went through your mind when you saw something obviously stupid or disgusting or repulsive or absurd, either comes out of this guy‘s mouth or goes through his head. And it’s hilarious.
I don’t like how often he abuses the name of the Lord, because you don’t need to do that to be funny or sarcastic or poignant. I also get tired of the over sexualization of every reference. Those bits do get old, but there are quite a lot of fairly on the nose, and some quite delightful, observations on humans, human nature, and the behavior of our fellow man.
Overall, if you like to laugh, and like the cyberpunk genre, this is probably worth the price. In my case the price was nothing since it was in the plus catalog. Which actually means the price is probably part of some other author’s credit, but I digress.
as for the virtual voice narrator. What’s to say about this, these things are always ridiculous. This one was probably a little less ridiculous than some. Australian accent, not bad. Some words that it consistently got wrong (I got kind of sick of hearing about ash holes), and the intonation and reflection always sucks. Also there are a few times when you lose track of who is speaking, because they didn’t take the time to alter the pitch on the character voices. Well there are no character voices, they are just the same TTS all the way down. I have heard this done better on YouTube videos, where they use some sort of AI to figure out which character is speaking, and alter the voice accordingly. Even though they get it wrong a certain percentage of the time, at least they try. that said, I didn’t hate it, and I wasn’t just laughing at the voice most of the time.
Overall a good read, and I needed some good laughs this weekend.
If you didn’t hate my review, please mark it helpful. That would be, well you know, helpful.
Oh the snark, the snark!
