For pharmaceutical process engineer Harold Newman and his family, sailing was a hobby and an escape from everyday life. When the recession hits and Harold is laid off, the family decides to take this opportunity to cruise south through the Intra-Coastal Waterway and explore some Caribbean Islands rather than engage in a frustrating job search during the coming recession. As they head south, sailing becomes their means of survival as the recession worsens and the economy and even society itself continue to unwind.
Is it safe to return to the USA? Who is this mysterious Reverend d’Aubigné? Does he indeed have a safe haven, or has he laid a trap for refugee travelers? Will they survive, or will they be forever haunted by what survival has forced them to do? You'll love this post-apocalyptic adventure.

The story is well written and I particularly enjoyed the theological content and related moral lessons in human interactions as they relate to a decaying society.
The narration seemed a bit dry at first but I quickly found myself drawn into the story and found that the narrator fit the pace and style of the book very well and was not dry at all.
Mostly I appreciated the book’s delving into the conscience of the characters and the struggle with morality and christian values as they are put to the test of a post modern apocalyptic collapse in a flawed world. The author shows obvious education and knowledge of christian theological principles and takes full advantage of that knowledge as he weaves it into an engrossing tale.
Even if you don’t share the christian world view it’s well worth a listen to gain a deeper understanding of the views of those who do.
A satisfying and unique tale of post world collapse existence

I love the practical approach that he takes instead of the "romantic" and "wild/carefree" approach you find in the majority of post-apocalyptic literature.
A well orchestrated look at a post collapse societ

Cruising Through Collapse is different. It is written more like classics such as Robinson Crusoe which, while being fiction, relates a tale that is entirely possible. And, like Robinson Crusoe, Cruising Through Collapse is chock full of practical details about sailing and survival that could actually be put to use.
The story is about a family surviving on their sailboat after a financial collapse and the resulting collapse of civil institutions. Underpinning the story are conversations about the philosophical/religious foundations of civil society.
So this is not a frivolous book. It can be read simply as an adventure or as something more.
